naviSaimaa- Developing Saimaa Inland Waterways- project aims at tackling the challenges and opportunities focusing on environmentally friendly inland shipping in the Saimaa Lake region and in the Saimaa Canal, fostering a better integration of inland shipping in the transport chains.
In Eastern Finland bioenergy and raw wood industry is increasing and creating significant transport volumes in the future. Therefore Eastern Finland needs innovative and pragmatic solutions to cope with future requirements on transport facilities.
The question that needs to be answered in the project is how the modal share of inland waterway transportation can be increased in the Saimaa Lake region and in the Saimaa Canal to make the transport chains of the industry and SMEs more friendly to the environment. The implementation of pilot activities, their promotion for wider acceptance and information that addresses the specific target groups is required.
The project consists of 4 work packages. The most important targets of the project are to share information between different stakeholders, co-operate with all related parties, including Russia, increase co-operation and enable the growth of inland waterway transport. The project focuses on both, transport of goods and people. The project is funded by Leverage from the EU-programme 2014-2020, The Regional Councils of North Karelia, South Karelia, North Savonia and South Savonia, municipalities and cities surrounding lake Saimaa as well as several companies who currently use inland waterways as a logistic solution in their operations.
